This reliability is also backed by AION being voted 1st in Quality for nine consecutive years and 1st in Customer Satisfaction for three consecutive years by car owners in China’s prestigious JD Power Awards.

AION batteries also come with their own 8-year warranty* and incorporate cutting edge intelligent cooling technology and built-in safety systems to perform better for longer.

What’s more, Smart Rescue reports that electric cars in general are 59% less likely to require breakdown assistance compared to cars with an engine. Take a look at our ‘Are electric cars more reliable than petrol cars?’ [1] article if you’d like a better understanding of the reasons behind this.

Running costs and savings

How much does an AION electric car cost to run?

Running costs depend on electricity prices, charging habits and driving routines. But generally, electricity usually costs far less per mile than petrol or diesel – particularly if you can charge your car overnight on an off-peak smart tariff. What’s more, EVs often have lower service and maintenance costs.

For a deeper dive into the comparative running costs of EVs versus petrol, take a look at this article

Is it cheaper to run an EV than a petrol car?

Usually yes – electricity costs per mile are typically lower, and EVs have fewer moving parts so maintenance is often cheaper. Actual savings depend on mileage, driving patterns, electricity rates and fuel prices.

How much does it cost to drive 100 miles in an AION car in the UK?

That depends on efficiency and electricity price. The engineered aerodynamics and battery performance of AION’s cars make them extremely efficient. As for electricity, home charging is generally the cheapest option – so a simple method to work out your expected mileage cost is to multiply the car’s kWh per 100 miles by your electricity price per kWh.

How much will I save switching to an AION electric car?

Savings vary by how much you drive, electricity vs fuel costs, and servicing. Many owners see lower fuel and maintenance bills, but total savings depend on your circumstances.

Home charging

Can you charge an EV with a standard home plug?

Yes, but it’s very slow and not recommended for regular use – a dedicated home charger (wallbox) is safer, faster and more efficient.

Can you have an EV charger without off-street parking?

Yes. Options include on-street lamppost chargers, public hubs, communal chargers for flats and workplace chargers. Lamppost and bollard charge points chargers are becoming increasingly common across the UK as EV uptake increase, with more and more local authorities and energy suppliers investing in on-street charging solutions.

Do electric cars automatically stop charging when full?

Yes. Just like when you’re charging your phone, chargers and cars communicate to stop charging when the battery reaches the set charge level.

How do you charge an electric car at home?

You can charge an electric car using either a household plug or a professionally installed EV charger. A standard household plug will give you a slow charge, but it’s not ideal as a long-term solution. A dedicated EV charger (wallbox) is the best solution, installed inside a garage or on an external wall, close to where you usually park the car.  Plug the cable into the car, select the charge settings on the car or your car’s app, and the car will charge automatically.

How fast can you charge an AION electric car at home?

With a dedicated home charger, you’ll typically get several times the power of a standard plug, allowing for much faster charging. Full charge times vary by car and charger, but a full 0% - 100% charge will usually take between 4 and 10 hours – ideal for overnight charging.

Is it safe to leave an AION charging overnight?

Yes, charging at home with a certified charger installed by a qualified electrician is safe. Cars and chargers have multiple safety systems to manage charging and stop it if anything goes wrong.

Can a normal electrician install an EV charger?

Only an EV charger qualified electrician should install your wallbox. You can search online for qualified EV charger specialists, or your EV dealerships should be able to provide recommendations.

Do I need to rewire my house for an EV charger?

Your EV charger qualified electrician will assess your house’s fuseboard and cables. Some older homes may need an upgrade to support faster chargers or multiple devices but, in the vast majority of cases, no rewiring will be necessary.

Can I plug an AION EV into any outlet?

Technically yes for very slow charging, but it’s not recommended as an effective long-term solution. A dedicated wallbox or approved public chargers are far more preferable in terms of safety and speed.

Charging costs and public charging

How do you charge an electric car without a driveway?

More and more councils are investing in on-street lamppost chargers to accommodate those without access to off-street parking. There are grants local councils and building managers can get to fund overnight charge points for residents. Take a look at our ‘How to charge your EV at home’ article for more details.

Can you run an EV charging cable across the pavement?

No, charging cables running from a property across a pavement present a trip hazard to pedestrians. Some councils allow temporary cable runs with protective covers and prior permission; always check local rules and use cable ramps where permitted.

How much does it cost to charge an AION?

It depends on where you’re charging. Multiply the kWh needed to top up the battery by the pence per kWh – whether that’s your home rate or one stated on a public charger. Overnight and off-peak tariffs can make home charging cheaper.

Are EV charging stations free in the UK?

Free charging can sometimes be found at supermarkets, leisure centres, hotels and tourist attractions for customers using their facilities, but it’s becoming increasingly rare. If you do find one, they’re likely to be the slower, standard charging speed with an output under 8kW.

Do you have to pay for parking when charging your electric car?

It depends on location. Some charging bays are free while you charge; others are subject to parking charges – check local signage or operator rules.

How much does it cost to charge an AION car at home?

Is charging an AION electric car at home cheaper than petrol?

Yes in most cases. Electricity cost per mile is generally lower than petrol, especially with off-peak home charging.

What is the cheapest way to charge an electric car?

Charging at home on a cheap or off-peak tariff is usually the least expensive. Plan charging for off-peak hours where possible.

EV living

How efficient is an AION compared to a petrol car?

EVs are much more efficient at converting energy into motion than petrol engines, so they use less energy per mile and often cost less to run.

What is an EV?

EV stands for electric vehicle – a car powered only by electricity (no petrol or diesel engine).

What is the difference between an EV and a hybrid?

An EV runs entirely on electricity; a hybrid combines an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Hybrids rely on petrol/diesel some or all of the time.

What is a plug-in hybrid?

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has a battery you can charge from the mains and an internal combustion engine for longer trips – it can run on electric power for short distances and petrol/diesel for longer ones.

What are the three types of EV charging?

Three common types:

  1. Slow/standard (AC) – basic home charging, low power with an output under 8kW
  2. Fast (AC) – faster charging, common in public parking and workplaces, with an output of 22kW
  3. Rapid/ultra-rapid (DC) — high power for fast top-ups on long trips with an output of between 50 to 90kW

Is it worth switching to an electric car?

If lower running costs, simpler servicing and quieter driving appeal, it’s often worth it –especially if you have convenient charging at home or nearby. The key factors to consider are your typical driving routine and your charging access.

Are AION cars good for long trips?

Yes – most EVs today have ranges perfectly capable of long journeys, supported by an ever- expanding fast-charging network if need be. Thanks to the cutting-edge battery technology in every AION model, our cars consistently deliver ranges at the top-end of their classes. Plan charging stops ahead and you’ll find even the longest trips straightforward and stress-free.

How practical are electric cars?

Electric cars offer all the practical benefits of engine cars, with the added benefits of being quiet, fume-free and generally less expensive to run and maintain. And once you get used to your charging routine you won’t miss those regular visits to the petrol station.

Ownership and reliability

Do AION cars require less maintenance than ICE vehicles?

Yes. AION cars, like all EVs, have fewer mechanical parts, meaning no oil changes or complex exhaust and fuel systems to investigate if things go wrong, making servicing simpler and cheaper.

Are electric cars low maintenance?

Generally, yes. They need brakes, tyres and typical checks, but they don’t need things like oil changes, fuel filters, spark plugs, belts or exhaust maintenance.

How does cold weather impact reliability of an AION car?

Some electric vehicles can struggle when extremes of temperature impact the performance of their batteries, leading to reduced range and slower charging.

AION batteries however, feature heat resistant protective layers and integral cooling systems. This helps them stay at the right temperature for optimum performance, making them far less affected by very hot or very cold weather. The result? A battery that performs consistently better, for longer.

Is the claimed range realistic?

The driving range of our cars is measured using the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure – more commonly known as the WLTP.

Two figures are produced – one, the ‘combined’ range, designed to mimic an average journey, mixing open road driving and the stop-start of urban driving; and two, the ‘city’ range which assumes the best-case range in urban use.

Because EVs recover energy through regenerative braking and use less power at lower speeds, the WLTP city range is higher than the combined figure. The WLTP tests show that the AION V for example can do up to 317 miles of combined driving on a single full charge.

An EV’s real range can also depend on speed, load, driving style, air con use. etc. There are a lot of different factors at play, but what the WLTP combined figure tries to do is approximate an average realistic driving scenario.

What drains an electric car battery the most?

High speed driving, heavy acceleration, steep hills and prolonged use of heating or air conditioning are the biggest drains on an electric car’s battery.

What happens if an AION car runs out of power?

Like a petrol car running out, you’ll eventually be immobilised. Low charge warnings will let you know in advance of this happening to ensure you can come to safe stop. If you do run out, roadside recovery and mobile charging services can help, but such scenarios can be easily avoided with a little planning in terms of your charging schedule.

What happens if the battery degrades?

All batteries slowly lose capacity over time. AION’s 8-year battery warranty* covers against significant degradation within that time. In the long-run, reduced capacity may start to lower a car’s range but doesn’t usually make the car unusable.

How much does it cost to replace an AION electric car battery?

Costs vary by size and model and are changing over time. But every AION car comes with an 8-year battery warranty* and features a battery designed to deliver consistent high performance for many years.

If you ever do need to replace your battery outside of the 8-year warranty* it can be a significant expense, but battery refurbishment and recycling programmes exist that can reduce the cost of replacement.

How are electric car batteries recycled?

Batteries are recovered, disassembled and valuable materials (like lithium, nickel, cobalt) are reclaimed for reuse. Recycling methods are improving fast to reduce waste and environmental impact.

Are lithium batteries worse than fossil fuels?

No. While battery production has an environmental footprint, EVs typically produce lower lifetime carbon emissions than petrol cars once charging is decarbonised. The recycling of battery materials as reduces the long-term environmental impact.

What is the lifespan of an AION car?

AION cars are well-crafted durable and will, if taken correct care of, last for decades. As with any electric vehicle, the battery will gradually lose some capacity over the long-term but will remain useful for over a decade and can be replaced or refurbished. Overall battery lifespan will depend on usage, maintenance and charging habits.

What warranty does AION offer?

AION offers an 8-year bumper-to-bumper vehicle warranty and an 8-year battery warranty on every car.*

Are electrical issues covered by AION’s warranty?

Yes.

What does an AION battery warranty cover?

Our battery warranties cover manufacturing faults and capacity dropping below a specified threshold for a set period (for example years/km).

Can AION cars be flat towed?

Like many EVs, AION cars should not be flat towed with all wheels on the ground as it can damage the motors. In the event of a breakdown, AION cars should be loaded onto a flat-bed truck instead of being towed by a rescue vehicle.
